Avoid using phrases such as you know, you might be thinking, etc..

Ending sentences with prepositions may be permissible, but if you avoid this your language will sound more formal

Do not use contractions when speaking formally

Phrasal Verbs

Though there´s a tendency to use fewer phrasal verbs in formal language, it´s not wrong to use them. Nevertheless, if there´s a one word verb that´s more formal, then use it.

A palavra pretty quando usada com uma conotação negativa soa informal.

Por exemplo: The Korean Team played pretty badly as a result they were defeated by The Brazilian Team today.

A palavra shut é mais informal, então se você está escrevendo uma redação por exemplo a palavra close seria mais apropriada.
